THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN (2016)
Released in 2016, “The Magnificent Seven” is a remake of the 1960 classic Western film of the same name, which itself was inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s 1954 film “Seven Samurai.” Directed by Antoine Fuqua and featuring an ensemble cast of acclaimed actors, the film pays homage to its predecessors while offering a fresh interpretation of the timeless tale of justice and heroism.
Set in the American Old West during the late 19th century, “The Magnificent Seven” unfolds in the small mining town of Rose Creek, which is under the tyrannical rule of ruthless industrialist Bartholomew Bogue, portrayed with menacing intensity by Peter Sarsgaard. Bogue’s oppressive grip on the town drives the desperate townsfolk to seek help from outsiders, leading them to hire seven skilled gunslingers to defend their homes and livelihoods.
The ensemble cast is led by Denzel Washington as Sam Chisolm, a bounty hunter with a mysterious past who becomes the de facto leader of the group. Joining him are Chris Pratt as Josh Farraday, a charming gambler and sharpshooter; Ethan Hawke as Goodnight Robicheaux, a troubled Confederate veteran and sharpshooter; Vincent D’Onofrio as Jack Horne, a volatile tracker and killer; Byung-hun Lee as Billy Rocks, an expert knife thrower and assassin; Manuel Garcia-Rulfo as Vasquez, a Mexican outlaw; and Martin Sensmeier as Red Harvest, a Comanche warrior.
